Ogden • Just good old-fashioned college football, as described by Weber State football coach Jay Hill at the end of the game Saturday, and it's even better when you end up with the high score.

The Wildcats did that, although the final numbers — particularly on offense — were nowhere near what they might have expected.

Weber State stayed unbeaten early in the Big Sky conference schedule by scoring a pair of touchdowns in the second half for a 14-10 home win over Portland State.

"We knew going in it was going to be a war. We knew our defense was going to have to play well against the run," Hill said. "Our guys will feel it tomorrow, and their guys hopefully will feel it tomorrow."

The winning touchdown came with 8:44 left in the game when Weber quarterback Jadrian Clark found receiver Andrew Vollert with a 12-yard pass into the end zone.

"This team is very simple schematically. We could watch a lot of film, but (we) pretty much know what they're going to give you," said Clark of the Portland State defense. "It was just our guys versus their guys, and we've got to win."

After not scoring in the first half, and down 7-0, Weber State (3-2, 2-0) moved the ball 84 yards on its first possession of the third quarter to tie the game.

The big play of the drive was a 46-yard run by Clark, who slipped one tackle at the line of scrimmage and then dodged another Vikings' defender to get into the clear. That run got the ball to the Portland State 10 and, two plays later, Emmanuel Pooler rushed in from the 3.

Pooler came into the game early when starting running back Treshawn Garrett suffered an injury. The senior from Fontana, Calif., ended up rushing 14 times for 75 yards and also had a key 24-yard screen reception in Weber's second scoring drive.

Portland State (2-4, 1-2) was quarterbacked by Alex Kuresa, who played high school ball at Mountain Crest High School. Kuresa passed for 181 yards, and also led the team in rushing with 62 yards.

The Vikings started the scoring very late in the second quarter when Kuresa leaped into the end zone on a 1-yard run 17 seconds before intermission. Early in the fourth, a 21-yard field goal by Portland State's Jonathan Gonzales gave the visitors a 10-7 lead.

Kuresa wasn't the only player taking snaps from center as two other Vikings also did some temporary quarterbacking duties in an effort to confuse the Weber defense.

"Keep your eye on the keys. If you do that, you won't go wrong," said Weber State safety Josh Burton on stopping the misdirection attempts. Burton finished with 16 tackles to lead the Wildcats.

"No one on this team really doubted we were going to win this game," Clark said. "There wasn't really a moment like that. It was just huge to come out in the second half and make some plays when it counted the most." —
