Ogden • Stagnant and in search of an offensive spark, the Weber State offense found one in its true freshman running back.
Tailback Treshawn Garrett rushed for a career-high 152 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to a 23-3 win over UC Davis Saturday at Stewart Stadium. Weber State improved to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the Big Sky Conference.
All the Wildcats needed was someone to assert himself offensively. The defense had everything else under control. UC Davis finished with 174 yards of offense after amassing 16 in the first half, including just two first downs.
"I just think everyone did their jobs today," said safety Mitch Tulane. "I don't think anyone played outside their minds, but [we] kind of did what we were supposed to do."
Garrett's 4-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter capped a six-play, 79-yard drive in just one minute and 49 seconds. After the Weber State defense handcuffed the Aggie offense on the ensuing possession, Garrett capped off a three-play, 42-yard drive with a 21-yard touchdown run. It was the second 100-yard rushing game of 2015 for the Palmdale, Calif., native and first since his 101-yard effort in Weber State's 32-14 win over Sacramento State on Sept. 19.
"I don't even know how to explain what a [running] back has, it's just the 'it' factor," Weber State coach Jay Hill said. "Treshawn has it."
Garrett eclipsed the 100-yard mark in the first half alone.
"The [offensive] line, they were doing their jobs," Garrett said. "I hit the holes and they were there. [I] feel wonderful."
Weber State kicker Josh Kealamakia hit three field goals in the victory, including two in the first half. The senior from Syracuse gave Weber a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter after a punt hit a UC Davis player and was recovered by the Wildcats.
The Wildcats close their 2015 regular season at home against Idaho State on Saturday, Nov. 21, with a shot at their first winning season since 2010.
"We haven't won more than two games the previous three years," Hill said. "We've got a chance now to win more games than they'd won three years prior to me coming here, so that's a big deal for this team and this program."
