Ogden • Everyone agrees that improving Weber State is on the threshold of winning its first game of the season.

Wildcat coach Jay Hill hopes it happens Saturday against Portland State.

PSU coach Nigel Burton hopes the Vikings can avoid being Weber's first victim.

"We have been in every single game the last six weeks," said Hill. "That's motivating our players. They are so close. Now they want to get over the top."

Burton agrees the Wildcats are better than last season, even though they are 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the Big Sky Conference.

Last week, the Wildcats played No. 9 Montana State into the final two minutes before losing, 23-13.

"They're in the same boat we're in," Burton said. "We're right on the verge of having that breakout game and then one little thing goes wrong. ... Some weird things have happened to them. But they are a good football team."

Starting with Portland State, Weber plays three of its next four games at Stewart Stadium. The Vikings are 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the Big Sky.

The Wildcats' biggest problem so far has been turnovers. They have committed 16 in their seven games and rank 119th in the country in turnover margin (-11).

"You have to win turnover margin and you have to score touchdowns in the red zone," Hill said. "We haven't been winning either battle this year." —
