The FIS Nordic Junior World Championships are back in the United States for the first time in more than 30 years.

The 2017 Junior World Championships and the U-23 cross-country World Championships kick off at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Midway and the Utah Olympic Park in Park City starting Monday.

According to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), it is expected to be the largest international event in Utah since the 2002 Olympic Winter Games 15 years ago. USSA anticipates more than 500 junior athletes to compete this week and as many as 1,500 athletes, coaches and support personnel to attend.

The Junior World Championships feature athletes 20 years old or younger, while the U-23's feature skiers aged 21 to 23. The event — the first in the U.S. since 1986 in Lake Placid, N.Y. — was brought to Utah by the USSA, Utah Sports Commission, Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation and the multiple venues involved.

The Junior World Championships are being held at an Olympic venue for the first time since 1997. That year it was held in Alberta, Canada, the site of the 1988 Olympic Games. The Junior World Championships take place a week after the U.S. Grand Prix came to Solitude Mountain Resort. The annual Visa Freestyle World Cup event at Deer Valley returns to Park City this week, Thursday through Saturday. —
