The University of Utah women's athletics programs finished 40th in Division I in the Capital One Cup standings for the 2016-17 academic year, while the men's programs placed 56th. The Capital One Cup standings rank Division I athletic programs based on NCAA Championship finishes, as well as final coaches' polls.

Utes women's programs recorded their second-best finish in the past seven years. The women's teams qualified for NCAA postseason play in cross country, gymnastics, softball, soccer and volleyball. The skiing program (coed) also qualified for the postseason.

The ski team won the NCAA Championship, while the gymnastics team placed fifth and the softball team advanced to the Super Regionals for the second year in a row and finished the season ranked 14th. Soccer ranked 16th, cross country ranked 20th and the volleyball team finished ranked 22nd.

The football program finished ranked 21st in the USA Today coaches poll, its third consecutive top-25 ranking.
