Los Angeles • For three rotations and five routines, it appeared Utah's gymnastics team would finally break its losing streak in UCLA's Pauley Pavilion.

But the fifth-ranked Bruins sneaked out a 197.1-197.075 win with their final routine of the day, crushing No. 7 Utah's hope of an upset after a valiant fight by the Utes (4-1, 2-1).

Utah, which led from the start, had a 49.35 on the balance beam. UCLA (3-2, 2-1) managed a 49.6 on the floor.

With the Utes finished on beam, the meet came down to Sadiqua Bynum's floor routine. She earned a 9.95 to win the meet for the Bruins.

The Utes went into the meet having won the past six meetings between the teams, but losing the past four in Los Angeles.

"You never like to lose, but hopefully we can learn from this and use what we learned down the road," Utah coach Tom Farden said. "They were disappointed we didn't get the 'W' but they should be pleased overall how they stayed together."

Utah went into the final rotation with a lot of confidence, thanks to their strong showings on the earlier events.

The Utes opened with a 49.2-49.075 advantage over UCLA as the uneven bars continue to be one of Utah's best events. Utah was led in the rotation by Kassandra Lopez and Baely Rowe, who scored 9.925 and 9.9, respectively. Leadoff gymnast Samantha Partyka scored 9.825.

Others had small breaks, but not enough to bring the score down much for the Utes.

Utah's lead was shaved to 98.3-98.25 after two rotations when UCLA posted a 49.175 on the uneven bars while the Utes had a 49.1 on the vault. The highlight for the Utes was a 9.85 from Kailah Delaney — the fourth straight on the event for Delaney.

The Utes went with the same floor rotation that earned a 49.625 in their recent win over Arizona. Against UCLA, they posted a 49.425, led by Sabrina Schwab's 9.95 and Breanna Hughes' 9.9.

The Bruins scored a 49.2 on the balance beam to set up the drama in the final rotation with the Utes holding a 147.725-147.45 lead.

Samantha Partyka did her part as she scored a 9.875 as the leadoff gymnast on beam. That routine gave the Utes hope they might be able to stave off a surge by the Bruins, especially when their leadoff on floor, Mikaela Gerber, scored 9.675.

Utah continued its strong showing with Hughes and Lopez earning 9.85s and Delaney scoring 9.875. Baely Rowe had a few wobbles and scored just 9.75, but the Utes were able to drop her score when Maddy Stover finished the rotation with a 9.9. —
