Coming in at the 7:19 mark, Jarmal Reid didn't make much of an entrance: The first time he touched the ball, he threw it out of bounds.

But the senior made up for it later on, cutting past Jakob Poeltl for a layup and giving Oregon State a 4-point lead. Gill Coliseum gave Reid a round of applause for his first basket since the last time he played Utah.

It was his first action since Reid receiving a four-game suspension after tripping official Tommy Nunez with three minutes left in Oregon State's first meeting in Salt Lake City, on Jan. 17. The Utes got a free throw that gave them the lead — which they kept for a 59-53 and Reid was tossed with a double technical.

The next day, Oregon State announced he would be sitting out at least four games, depending on his conduct during the suspension. Reid apologized in a school release, and coach Wayne Tinkle said that he had worked with the Pac-12 to determine the punishment.

Before his suspension, Reid occupied a bit role in the OSU front court, averaging 4.2 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. Tinkle didn't tip his hand prior to the game if Reid would play.

He checked in midway through the first half, bringing his discipline to a close.

The officiating crew on the floor Thursday night was Verne Harris, Kevin Brill and Eric Curry. He didn't draw a foul with seven minutes played in the first half.

While his son scored in double digits against the Utes, the original Glove took in the game courtside.

Gary Payton I, a nine-time NBA all-star and Basketball Hall of Famer, had a seat down on the floor in Gill Coliseum, whereh his number is retired and his banner hangs. While Payton is best known as one of the best defensive players in NBA history for the Seattle Supersonics, he holds a revered spot for the Beavers. He was an All-American in 1990, and still has OSU's all-time scoring record with 2,172 points.

Briefly

Guards Kenneth Ogbe and Jake Connor did not make the trip to Oregon. … Peoltl scored double digits for his sixth straight game.
