The showdown between UCLA's Samantha Peszek and Utah's Georgia Dabritz was good as predicted. Unfortunately for the Utes, Peszek came out on top in Friday's gymnastics clash at the Huntsman Center.

Peszek scored a 39.625 to win the all-around while Dabritz was second with a 39.575.

The two are expected to be among the contenders for the national title at the end of the season.

Friday's meet came down to the final minutes where Peszek scored a 9.95 on the beam to clinch the win while Dabritz finished with a 9.925 on the floor.

Afterward Dabritz said she was just happy to hit four for four, including a 9.825 on the balance beam.

"It's no secret that hasn't been a strong event for me and I am just happy to be in the all-around," she said.

The most controversial moment in the meet came when Dabritz had a 9.875 on the uneven bars. One judge gave her a 9.95 while the other gave her just 9.8.

Utah's coaches were told the one judge simply saw minor deductions the other didn't. While the crowd booed, Dabritz said it was a fair score.

"I know where my mistakes were tonight," she said.

Dabritz did win the vault with a 9.95.

Peszek had 9.9 on the vault and bars and a 9.875 on the floor.

Dabritz had the added distraction of competing while knowing her club coach, Laura Tebo, is battling cancer at home in Massachusetts and requested to see Dabritz.

Utah's coaches gave Dabritz the option of going home earlier in the week and miss Friday's meet but she elected to stay.

"I think it was good for her because it gave her that part of the day when she could just focus on gymnastics," Utah coach Greg Marsden said.

Roster notes

Kari Lee was pulled from the vault and floor lineup due to sore Achilles' tendons. Freshman Tiffani Lewis replaced her, scoring 9.825 on the vault and 9.8 on the floor.

Lee still provided a key score, posting a 9.9 on the balance beam. Fellow freshman Maddy Stover wasn't going to be outdone and scored 9.85.

Breanna Hughes scored 9.8 on the floor as she competed in place of Baely Rowe, who was sick.
