Logan • The Utah State Aggies have some holes to fill, and on Signing Day, they took the first steps to address them.

The Aggies signed 21 players on Wednesday, including seven junior college transfers who, theoretically, should be able to provide some immediate help after USU's 3-9 finish in 2017 (1-7 in the Mountain West).

Aggie coach Matt Wells' fifth signing class, also features 14 prep signees and five players who will serve LDS Church missions before enrolling at USU.

"We are excited about the future of this signing class and the young men who will represent Utah State University both on and off the football field," Wells said in a statement. "We really like the length and athleticism of this group, and we are anxious to get the opportunity to work with them on a daily basis."

The Aggies put their biggest emphasis on the offensive line and at linebacker, where USU signed five players at each position. The Aggies rounded out theor 2017 class with three defensive backs, two defensive linemen, two wide receivers, one quarterback, one running back, one tight end and one athlete.

"We felt like we had some immediate needs on the offensive line and at the linebacker position, and we were able to meet those needs with this group," said Wells. "We were also able to sign several players that will compete for immediate playing time."

Utah State made a big haul locally, at least in terms of numbers. The Aggies signed seven Utahns on Wednesday. USU also reeled in five players from California and two players each from Florida and Nevada.

"The state of Utah has always been and always will be our number one priority, as well as our mission kids and our Poly-nesian connections, and all three of those areas were met with productive numbers with this class," said Wells.

In all, Utah State's 2017 class includes 11 recruits on offense and 10 defensive players. —
