Logan • Utah State holds its second scrimmage of spring practice Friday at Maverik Stadium.
The 100-play session starts at 3:30 p.m. It is open to the public, and there is no charge for admission.
"We're a little further ahead in some spots than I anticipated and that makes me happy," coach Matt Wells said. "But there are a couple of positions where we're a little behind.
"Some of the reasons for that may be because of injuries or guys not stepping up as much as I would have liked. But that's typical at this point in the spring."
Junior quarterback Kent Myers believes the Aggies have taken steps toward rebounding from last year, when they lost four of their last five games and finished 6-7. The season ended with a 23-21 loss to Akron in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
Said Myers, "I heard a coach say this the other day — that we're ahead of where they were two years ago, when they went [10-4]. So we're all coming along. We're just going to keep moving."
Utah State opens its season on Sept. 1 against Weber State. By then, the Aggies hope to have found replacements for their top two wide receivers from 2015.
Hunter Sharp finished his senior year with 71 catches for 835 yards and nine touchdowns. Devonte Robinson had 20 receptions for 326 yards and two TDs.
Two candidates to fill the void left by Sharp and Robinson are Kennedy Williams and Alex Byers. Williams is a senior from Las Vegas. Byers is a transfer from Antelope Valley (Calif.) College.
"Kennedy Williams is really explosive," Myers said. "He's doing a good job. And a new guy who came in and is doing a good job is Alex Byers. Once he starts learning the plays a little bit better, he's going to be a man that's hard to stop. Even without knowing all the plays, he's been scoring a lot of touchdowns."
The annual Blue-White game, which concludes spring practice, is scheduled April 9.
"The attitude and coach-ability of this group has been great," Wells said. "Now we want to see these guys perform again in a live situation in front of our fans and continue to play at a high level."
