Seattle • Washington freshman Jake Browning is one of the top young quarterbacks in the Pac-12.

Utah State knows.

Browning threw for 368 yards and three touchdowns Saturday, leading Washington to a 31-17 non-conference victory over the Aggies at Husky Stadium.

At one point in his third career start, Browning completed 12 straight passes. Two of his touchdown passes covered 81 and 33 yards.

"Jake threw the ball pretty well," said Washington coach Chris Petersen. "He had one pick that he would probably like back. But he battled and did a good job."

Browning's interception came on the first play of the second half, but he led Washington to touchdowns on its next two possessions as the Huskies built a 31-10 lead.

"You have to have short-term memory," Browning said. "It was a dumb play by me. You can't make that throw. That could have been a big momentum shift … but our defense did a good job of getting the ball back."

Familiar foes

Utah State's Matt Wells and Petersen have coached against each other since 2002.

At the time, Wells was the tight end coach and recruiting coordinator at Tulsa. Petersen was the offensive coordinator at Boise State. Both schools played in the Western Athletic Conference.

"… We had some battles then," Wells said. "Just getting to know him over the years, I have a lot of respect for him."

Ten members of Washington's coaching staff worked with Petersen at Boise State. They are in their second season with with the Huskies.

Huskies celebrate $41M field deal

During a stoppage of play the third quarter, a brief ceremony was held to unveil two new Alaska Airlines logos on the artificial surface at Husky Stadium.

Two weeks ago, Washington announced a 10-year, $41 million naming rights deal with Alaska Airlines — the largest in college athletics.

Washington's home venue for football will now be known as Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium.

As you would expect, Washington's deal is much more lucrative than Utah State's new agreement with Maverik, which bought the naming rights for the former Romney Stadium in April. The Aggies' deal with Maverik is worth $6.3 million over 22 years.
