Boise, Idaho • Utah State had dreams of earning a spot in the Mountain West championship game, but it was the Boise State Broncos who had the talent to claim the right.

The No. 25 Broncos (10-2, 7-1) looked every bit like a championship team Saturday, simply demolishing the Aggies 50-19 at Albertson's Stadium.

The Aggies (9-4, 6-2), who were riding a five-game winning streak, offered up a tease that they might be worthy of earning a rare win in Boise when freshman LaJuan Hunt ripped off a 55-yard run on the game's first play.

Unfortunately, that was about the only real highlight the offense could deliver as the Aggies were surprisingly manhandled in the game.

The Aggies did everything they shouldn't have done to have a chance at beating the Broncos.

Quarterback Kent Myers threw an interception that set up the Broncos' second touchdown, Jalen Davis had a fumble on a kickoff return that set up another and kicker Nick Diaz, who had made eight field goals in a row, missed on a 39-yard attempt.

But most surprising was the way the USU defense let Boise State running back Jay Ajayi and his teammates run wild. The Broncos scored touchdowns on five straight trips to the red zone, leading to a 34-12 halftime advantage while Ajayi finished with 229 yards and five touchdowns on 27 carries.

So much for the drama of the MWC Championship being on the line. In the end, the Aggies provided little more than a refresher for the BSU starters to run through some plays in preparation for the title game that will be played here against Fresno State on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (6-6, 5-3) clinched their spot with a 28-21 win over Hawaii.

If Boise State beats Fresno State, the Broncos will be awarded a spot in a New Year's Day bowl as the Group of 5 (American Athletic Conference, MAC, Mountain West, Conference-USA, Sun Belt) representative.

As for the Aggies, they'll have to wait for the selection show on Dec. 7 to learn their postseason fate, although a meeting with UTEP in the Dec. 20 New Mexico Bowl seems like a logical destination.

Going bowling for a fourth straight year is an achievement for the USU program, particularly for a team that has endured as many injuries as the Aggies have this year.

Unfortunately, the regular season ended in one of the most disappointing games the Aggies have played in recent seasons.

The game looked like a promising matchup since the Broncos had one of the best offenses in the country while the Aggies had one of the best defenses.

But the Broncos simply had too much speed for Utah State on both sides of the ball.

Ajayi, who entered the game averaging 126.4 yards a game, set the tone when he rushed four times for 30 yards and a touchdown on the Broncos' first drive.

Utah State's own run game never really had a chance to develop wit Myers throwing an interception on USU's second drive.

Boise State responded with a six-play, 45-yard scoring drive to make it a 14-0 game, forcing the Aggies to play catchup with their passing game.

But like everything else for the Aggies Saturday, the passing game was grounded and ineffective.
