Houston • Saturday's thunderstorms forced only the second postponement in Real Salt Lake history since the team began play in 2005.

The previous occasion was on July 16, 2011, on the road versus the Vancouver Whitecaps, because of drainage problems with a temporary grass field installed for the Canadian side's friendly against English Premier League club Manchester City. The teams did not meet until October 6 — and Vancouver won, 3-0.

Several Dynamo players who live in suburban Houston would have struggled to arrive more than a few minutes before the scheduled start on Saturday because of the tough driving conditions caused by the heavy rain — especially winger Leonel Miranda, whose car was flooded. No such worries for RSL, which stayed in a downtown hotel a mile or so from BBVA Compass Stadium.

This was the second meeting between the clubs in two weeks. RSL came from behind to beat Houston 2-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium on April 30 for its fifth successive win over the Dynamo, a streak dating to August 2013. Prior to that, RSL had struggled against the Texans, with only three wins in 17 encounters.

Starting lineup

Forward Joao Plata made his first start since suffering a hip flexor strain last month and played 90 minutes. Back-up goalkeeper Jeff Attinella started for the second time this year while first-choice Nick Rimando was on the bench. The move aimed to keep Attinella sharp ahead of a possible extended run if Rimando goes to the Copa America. He is on the preliminary 40-man U.S. roster for the tournament, which runs June 3-26, as is midfielder Kyle Beckerman. The US training camp opens on Monday in Miami for Europe and Mexico-based players.
