Corner Canyon boys' basketball coach Tony Cannon has resigned to focus on his health after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, The Salt Lake Tribune confirmed on Tuesday.

Cannon inherited the program in its infancy three years ago when the Draper-based school first opened its doors. He finished 34-34 overall, including leading the Chargers (18-6), who lost in the Class 4A first round, to their first winning season in school history this year despite battling his illness.

"I think we made a good start. I definitely think somebody else can come in and take it to new heights," Cannon said of the condition of the program. "I'm excited to see who they select and look forward to following them in the future."

Cannon, who said he doesn't believe he'll be involved in the process of picking his replacement, previously coached at crosstown rival Alta. In total, he has coached basketball in various capacities for 26 years.

He will continue to teach history and physical education at Corner Canyon, though he said his responsibilities may change with his resignation.
