The first 3-pointer of Derrick Favors' NBA career came last week against the Golden State Warriors. His second will have to wait. Favors ended up with the ball in his hands and fired a 3-pointer at the buzzer that nearly banked in to tie the game. Alas, it did not. "The play was for Trey or Joe or one of those guys to come out and get the 3," Favors said, "but Portland was denying him so I just went back, got the ball and shot it. It almost went in, but it's something in the future I'll be able to do. But I just take it as I got a good look and I missed it." Still, it might have been one of the only shots Favors forced up Wednesday night. With Gordon Hayward out of action, Favors carried the load for the shorthanded Jazz. "It's one of those things where sometimes adversity allows you to find out more about your team," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said after the game. "Your guys have opportunities to contribute. And thought the way that he scored too, was very efficient. It wasn't like he just said, 'Hey, Gordon's out. Here I come.' He really got baskets within the flow of the game." Favors finished with 26 points on 9-of-19 shooting. "I just tried to be aggressive, just take what Portland gave me," he said. • Late in the game, Trey Burke had to chase down a pass and, after gathering the ball near the sideline, felt a sharp pain and had to call time out. Burke lay on the floor for a moment, holding his next. But after a timeout, he returned to action. "I kind of turned my head too fast and sharp pains went down my neck and I just got numb," he said. "My whole head and neck got numb. It was like a pinched nerve. I feel better now, so I just wanted to get back out there for my team and try to help us win." • Damian Lillard's thoughts on the game: "It was a tough game. They've been one of the better teams in the league since the all-star break. We knew it was going to be a tough one. Coming up here in the altitude, them on their home floor playing well. We had to go and take it. We and to come together and get tougher on the defensive end and play together on the offensive end. I thought we did that. We did everything we needed going down the stretch to get it done." • Maybe Rudy Gobert has a future in coaching
