For 59 minutes and 57 seconds, things looked good for the Utah Grizzlies. With a 2-1 lead and Ryan Faragher in net, it appeared the home team was going to defeat the defending Kelly Cup champion Allen Americans.

But with 3.5 seconds remaining in the third period, Allen defenseman Aaron Gens scored his first goal of the season on a slapshot that stunned Faragher and the 5,263 fans in attendance at the Maverik Center.

The worst was yet to come, as Allen won in a shootout, 3-2.

In the first period, a fight ensued between Allen's Derek Mathers and Utah's Travis Howe seemed to spark a fire under the Grizzlies. Shortly after the brawl, Kenton Helgessen sent the puck behind the net to Jon Puskar, who snuck it through Allen goalkeeper Riley Gill's legs for a 1-0 lead at the 2:37 mark in the second period. It was Puskar's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Allen tied the game at 1 when Michael Brodzinski's wrist shot got past Faragher and found its way into the back of the net. The Grizzlies' Taylor Richart gave the home team a 2-1 lead in the third period with a slapshot past Gill before Gens' goal sent the game into overtime.

Utah outshot Allen 7-2 in overtime, but Gill was solid in the net and the overtime session finished scoreless.

Greger Hanson and Matt Willows beat Faragher in the shootout to seal Allen's comeback.

Faragher made 35 saves in the loss and Gil stopped 38 shots. —
