Spokane, Wash. • Nadia Gomes scored her first goal of the season in the 70th minute, lifting the No. 6 BYU Cougars over the Gonzaga Bulldogs 1-0 on Thursday in both teams' West Coast Conference women's soccer opener.

The Cougars (9-1-1, 1-0-0) outshot the Bulldogs (1-6-4, 0-1-0) 18-11. Rachael Boaz made four saves to earn the shutout.

Women's volleyball

Fresno State 3, Utah State 1 • In Logan, the Aggies are still searching for their first Mountain West Conference victory after losing in four sets to the visiting Bulldogs — 25-19, 15-25, 25-19, 25-20.

Kayla DeCoursey had a team-high 10 kills for Utah State (4-13, 0-3), which has lost four of its past five matches.

Utah Valley 3, CSU Bakersfield 1 • In Orem, Lauren Bakker tallied a match-high 17 kills to lead the Wolvernines to a 25-22, 26-24, 21-25, 25-21 victory in Western Athletic Conference play. Kiahna Steiner had 17 kills for Utah Valley (6-9, 2-1).

Portland State 3, Weber State 2 • In Ogden, the Wildcats rallied to win sets two and three, but couldn't close out the Vikings in 25-20, 20-25, 20-25, 25-18, 18-5 loss in Big Sky Conference action.

Amanda Varley led Weber State (5-9, 1-2) with 16 kills.
