BASEBALL • Oregon rallied to beat Utah 8-3 on Friday evening at Smith's Ballpark to open a three-game Pac-12 series. Utah led 3-2 before Oregon put up six runs in the top of the ninth inning.

The Utes were led at the plate by Dallas Carroll and AJ Young, who each went 2 for 3.

Bret Helton pitched six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Brock Duke threw 22⁄3 innings, allowing six runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Trenton Stoltz also pitched in the final inning.

The Utes were led at the plate by Dallas Carroll and AJ Young, who each went 2 for 3.

Utah took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Andre Jackson singled and advanced to second on an error. Jackson moved to third on a fly out and scored on Carroll's single through the left side.

The Utes increased their lead to 2-0 when Jackson scored on a passed ball after leading off the inning with a walk.

Oregon scored two runs on two hits in the sixth inning, with a pair of leadoff singles leading to scores on ground outs.

The Utes retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth, 3-2. Young hit a well-placed bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error on the play. After he moved to third on a bunt, Young scored on a passed ball following a blunder on an attempted intentional walk.

Santa Clara 8, BYU 7 • In Santa Clara, Calif., the host Broncos scored on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning for the victory. BYU starter Kolton Mahoney (4-7) took the loss, giving up eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits over 81⁄3 innings. Reliever Keaton Cenatiempo gave up the decisive walk after entering the game in the ninth.

Brennon Lund, Derrick Whitney and Tanner Chauncey had two hits each for the Cougars.

Trinidad 7, SLCC 3 • In Taylorsville, Salt Lake Community College's season ended with the loss in the NJCAA's Western District Tournament. The Bruins scored all of their runs in the first inning, with Austin Ovard and Chris Fougner each hit an RBI double.
