men's volleyball • The University of Southern California defeated BYU 3-2 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation quarterfinal on Saturday night in Los Angeles. Fourth-seeded USC's Alex Slaught had 21 kills as the fourth-seeded Trojans prevailed 25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-13.

Matt Underwood had 21 saves for fifth-seeded BYU (17-10), and Brenden Sander had 15 saves.

BYU pole vaulter Monteverde wins

TRACK AND FIELD • BYU's Anginae Monteverde won the women's pole vault during the Robison Invitational at the Clarence F. Robison Track and Field Complex with a mark of 13 feet, 9.75 inches, the third best in school history.

Shaquille Walker anchored the BYU men's 4x400-meter relay team to victory in a season-best time of 3 minutes, 06.64 seconds.

Southern Utah's Kayla Kovar won the women's hammer throw with a mark of 189 feet, 8.50 inches.

• At the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, the Utah women's team finished ninth in the medley relay with a time of 3:53.61. The relay team consisted of Sarah Feeny, Alissa Atisme, Grace Englund and Hannah McInturff.

Carroll notches eight K's in Utes' win

BASEBALL • Dalton Carroll struck out eight over eight innings as Utah defeated Washington State 4-1 in a Pac-12 game at Smith's Ballpark. Carroll (5-5) allowed one run on six hits in the win. Brock Duke entered in the ninth inning and earned his team-leading fourth save of the season.

Wyler Smith led Utah (14-24, 6-11) at the plate, going 2 for 2 with an RBI and a walk. Cole Taylor and Cody Scaggari also drove in runs for the Utes.

The Utes got on the board in the second inning after Taylor led off the inning with a walk. Smith beat out a bunt single, and Hunter Simmons also laid down a bunt. In an attempt to make the out on Taylor at third, the pitcher threw wide, leading to a run. Kody Davis also walked in the inning as the Utes left the bases loaded.

Utah took a 2-0 lead with a run in the third. Dallas Carroll led off the inning with a single, and Smith hit a two-out RBI double to left center to increase the Utes' lead.

BYU 3, San Francisco 2 • In Provo, Bronson Larsen's scored on a wild pitch in the 10th inning to give BYU a series sweep over league-leading San Francisco at Miller Park.

BYU's Brennon Lund extended his hitting streak to 20 games, while Larsen extended his to 13 games. Colton Shaver went 1 for 4 with his 10th home run of the season and two RBIs.

With the win, BYU (21-19, 11-7 West Coast Conference) collects its first series sweep of the season in the league.

Utah Valley 6, Grand Canyon 5 • In Orem, the Wolverines rallied for five runs in the fifth inning to beat the Antelopes in a Western Athletic Conference game. With the Wolverines (13-26, 9-8) trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Craig Brinkerhoff singled home Greyson Bogden to make it a 5-2 contest. Later in the inning, Palmer Page tied the game with a three-run triple. Page then scored what turned out to be the winning run when Seth Rhineer drove him home with a base hit to center.

SLCC 4, Colorado Northwestern 3 • In Taylorsville, Salt Lake Community College pitcher Jared White earned the win by holding the Spartans scoreless on two hits over seven innings, and the Bruins completed a series sweep. Chris Fougner had two RBIs for SLCC, and Trevor Peterson went 2 for 4.

Cougars complete sweep of San Diego

softball • Riding the outstanding pitching of McKenna Bull and consistent overall play, BYU softball finished off a West Coast Conference series sweep over second-place San Diego at Gail Miller Field with 9-3 and 6-2 victories. Bull allowed nine hits and five runs over three games against the Toreros to help the league-leading Cougars widen their advantage in the WCC standings. BYU improved to 34-9 overall and 9-0 in WCC play while USD saw its record fall to 28-21 and 7-5.

Missouri-Kansas City 9-7, Utah Valley 7 • In Orem, Brianna Gatlin, Jaylen Watson and Kristy Snyder all hit home runs for UVU, but the Wolverines (16-36, 3-12 WAC) lost their final home game of the season.

BYU's Rodgers wins Cougar Classic

GOLF • Jordan Rodgers won the individual title at the Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club in Provo, helping the Cougars finish third in the team standings. Rodgers beat Utah State's Seokwon Jeon by scoring a birdie on the second playoff hole, after the two finished the third round tied at 5-under 211.

Colorado State (853) won the team title, followed by Pacific (861) and BYU (862).

Southern Utah's Tim Leonard and Nic Booth, and BYU's Austin Banz were among five golfers tied for third place at 212.

Ute pair defeated at Pac-12 tourney

WOMEN'S TENNIS • In Ojai, Calif., Utah's Jena Cheng and Sarah Richter, the Utes' only remaining competitors at the Pac-12 championships, were defeated in the doubles invitational semifinals. Cheng and Richter lost to USC's Gabriella DeSimone and Zoe Katz, 8-1.
