The Utah Grizzlies and the E Center of West Valley City will host a preseason game between the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks on Sunday, Oct. 5.

It is the first preseason NHL game that the Grizzlies - who are an affiliate to the New York Islanders - have hosted in 10 years. The last preseason game hosted by the Grizzlies and the E Center was in 1998 between the Kings and the Sharks, which ended in a 2-1 overtime victory for the Kings.

Adrian Denny, director of operations and broadcasting for the Grizzlies, said the event is a great way to kick off the season for fans and players.

"It's always been something we wanted to have back here. Anything that's good for hockey is good for the Grizzlies," Denny said. "Grizzlies hockey just had a great season, [and] this is going to be a nice springboard."

The Grizzlies finished the 2007-08 regular season 32-30-10. After winning their first Kelly Cup playoff games, the Grizzlies had an 8-7 postseason record.

Grizzlies coach/director of hockey operations Jason Christie said he hopes the Grizzlies will take every opportunity to get better, even if it means taking something away from the exhibition game.

"That's when we start our training, so it'll be good for them to see," Christie said.

The Grizzlies open their 2008-2009 season on the road with the Idaho Steelheads on Oct. 18.

Tickets for the general public will go on sale Aug. 1.
