The effect of the Jazz's 93-82 victory over the Rockets in the opener of their first-round playoff rematch might have been the same. It took the Jazz just one game to reclaim home-court advantage and now Houston faces a tall task.
In order to advance, the Rockets will need to win at least one game at EnergySolutions Arena, where the Jazz were an NBA-best 37-4 during the regular season. Game 2 of the series will be Monday night in Houston.
Andrei Kirilenko hit 8 of 12 shots on teh way to scoring 21 points. Carlos Boozer (20 points, 16 rebounds) and Deron Williams (20 points, 10 assists) both posted double-doubles. The Jazz bench outscored Houston's 28-17 for the game.
The Jazz led by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter as fans in the lower bowl began exiting with three minutes left. The team that wins Game 1 has gone on to win the best-of-seven series 78.2 percent of the time in NBA history.
Tracy McGrady finished with 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds but went 7 of 21 from the field, same as he did in the Rockets' loss to the Jazz last week. Bobby Jackson went 3 of 15 as Houston shot 36.7 percent for the game.
The Jazz pulled away in the third quarter after watching Boozer and Paul Millsap head to the bench with four fouls. Kirilenko knocked down a 22-footer and Luis Scola picked up his third and fourth fouls, the latter as he tried to take a charge on Mehmet Okur.
Kyle Korver drilled two three-pointers and blocked McGrady from behind. It was enough for the Jazz to take a 68-60 lead into the fourth quarter. Kirilenko spun for a basket inside to open the fourth and Williams buried a three-pointer to make it 75-63.
The Jazz took a 79-64 lead as Boozer followed up the second of Matt Harpring's two missed free throws and then drove for a layup with 7:30 left.
Kirilenko, who averaged 11.0 points in the regular season, cut to get open, posted up inside, drove to the basket and hit jumpers from 18 and 22 feet plus a three-pointer.
