Fish defeats Federer in semi

No. 98 Mardy Fish stunned No. 1 Roger Federer 6-3, 6-2 Saturday in the Pacific Life Open semifinals in Indian Wells, Calif.

Fish dominated the match against the three-time Indian Wells champion, continuing Federer's frustration this season. The once invincible-seeming Swiss star has lost three times this year, including losses to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semifinals and Andy Murray in the opening round at Dubai.

The 26-year-old Federer had been slowed by mononucleosis earlier in the year, but said during the Indian Wells tournament that he was OK again.

The 26-year-old Fish moved into today's final against Djokovic, a 6-3, 6-2 winner over defending champion Rafael Nadal.

* No. 5-ranked Maria Sharapova pulled out of the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla., citing a shoulder injury. Her withdrawal came a day after her 18-match winning streak ended with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova at Indian Wells.

Frenchman sets 100-free record

Alain Bernard broke the world record in the 100-meter freestyle for the second time in two days Saturday, setting a new mark of 47.50 seconds in the final at the European swimming championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

The 24-year-old Frenchman took one-tenth of a second off his record of 47.60 in Friday's semifinals, which shattered Pieter Van den Hoogenband's mark set at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

* In Sydney, Australia, Emily Seebohm broke the world record in the non-Olympic 50-meter backstroke at the Australian swimming trials, and fellow Australian Stephanie Rice broke the world record in the 400-meter individual medley.

Seebohm finished in 27.95 seconds, taking 0.05 seconds off American Hayley McGregory's mark set two weeks ago.

Rice finished in 4 minutes, 31.46 seconds, taking 1.43 seconds off American Katie Hoff's mark of 4:32.89 set last year.
