During the race, a crash between Korean Lee Ho-suk and Canadian Charles Hamelin allowed Ohno to go head-to-head with Korean Lee Seung-hoon. The race's finale was just what Ohno was looking for.
"It is my favorite [way to race]," Ohno said. "Usually I have to deal with two or three Koreans team-skating, so it felt more even."
Ohno pulled ahead and finished with a time of 1 minute, 27.137 seconds. The veteran skater was satisfied with his results Sunday after finishing in third in Saturday's 1,500 meter race.
"I learned from my mistakes and came back today with full confidence that I could do what I wanted to do," Ohno said.
While Ohno had a solid Sunday, he was the only American male skater to grace the podium. The team also took a hit when Jeff Simon broke his collarbone early in the day.
On the women's side, the U.S. relay team is continuing to get better. Finishing behind two of the best relay teams in the world, Korea and China, the United States women placed third in the 3,000-meter relay with a time of 4:13.793.
The team was anchored by Katherine Reutter, who enjoyed success on her own Sunday, finishing second in the 1,000. She thought the relay team had a good race.
"It was one of our best," Reutter said. "Our exchanges were good, we were skating defensively, and overall it was good."
The United States' three medals were a part of six podium visits for the team during the weekend, which was the most on the current World Cup circuit.
The home ice played in the American's favor, but Reutter felt the team's finishes had nothing to do with the judges.
"I don't think we had any home-ice advantage this weekend," Reutter said. "Everything we got we earned."
This stop was the last before the World Championships, starting March 7th in Korea.
"This was a big step heading into worlds to see where we stand," Reutter said. "It was nice to see we are on an even playing field with everyone else, and if we are with them now, we are going to be with them then."
