More and more, Weber State football coach Ron McBride is finding that recruiting against Division I schools in college football is not that easy.

McBride, the former Utah coach, was still able to sign a class on Wednesday he called solid, with 17 recruits signing to play for the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) school.

The Wildcats loaded up on linemen, signing nine players who they hope will help them in the trenches.

"A big need was in the defensive front," McBride said.

Four players who signed Wednesday - Fremont's Joel Hancock, Clearfield's Blake Sims, Bear River's Caldwell Taylor and East's Nick Webb - recently returned from LDS Church missions and originally signed with the Wildcats in 2005.

Four others signed with Weber State during December's early signing period for mid-year and junior college transfers: receiver Joe Collins, defensive lineman Joe Larson, offensive tackle Nestor Cruz and defensive back Antwain Stutson.

Locally, the Wildcats signed Cottonwood High's Spencer Rangasan, Layton's Justin Turner and Bountiful's Jamie Rigby.
