Haws managed a last-second kick with about 100 yards left in the 3-mile race to beat Skyline's Shalaya Kipp, who's also known for her last-second kick, to win the individual title. So why the surprised look?
"Because I've never been a state champion before," she said.
Take a number, Haws.
The Darts didn't just walk away from Sugar House Park with an individual state champion, but also with the state team trophy, the school's first. And the Davis runners - including the ones who didn't participate, along with the boys' team that had just won its second straight state title - jogged around the Highland High track while singing the Darts' school song.
It was a victory that took two years to achieve. The Darts were favored to win last season, but Jordan - which didn't have a runner finish in the top 10 - captured its first championship. The Darts came into Wednesday's race ranked 25th in the nation, and this time the girls proved they could live up to the expectations by having three runners finish in the top 10.
"The plan was to get out aggressive," coach Corbin Talley said, "to really hold our spots and give all we had in the last 1,000 meters."
In all, it was a dominant performance. Haws finished first, senior Candace Eddy in fifth and sophomore Emily Hansen in 10th. And with Loren Storey claiming 17th place and freshman Meghan Hedquist 22nd, the Darts outdistanced all competitors - Davis finished with 55 points to runner-up Skyline's 102.
"We just worked so hard the whole season," Haws said, "and we've come together so much that it just feels so good."
And nothing was going to stop the Darts. Just ask Eddy, whose asthma was a problem because of the cold and rainy weather.
"Without her," Talley said of Eddy, "we wouldn't have gotten it."
Class 4-A: Mountain View looked to restart its dynasty run, as a young group of runners won the school's 16th state title since 1985.
Class 3-A: Cedar City won its eighth state title with freshman Aubrey Bryson placing sixth overall.
Class 2-A: Millard won its first state title by having four runners - Shelli Richardson, Stevie Crook, Whitney Holding and Kylie Labrum - finish in the top 10.
Class 1-A: St. Joseph won its third state title in six years, with Andrea Chavez, Tauna DeHaan, Alex Shaw and Erin Trout finish second, third, fourth and ninth, respectively.
