Utah (9-2-3, 1-0-1 MWC) had just handed Brigham Young its first loss (11-1-2, 1-1-0) of the 2007 soccer season and Letro didn't have a hand in the game's single goal Saturday night in Provo. Or did she?
Just the Ute junior's presence may have taken just enough attention from Melissa Crespo, who headed the game winner into the goal with 30 minutes to play.
"From the beginning, we had a lot to work on," said Letro, who has 14 goals this season and 33 for her career. "This is definitely nice. I've been here a long time."
Odds are she'll add to her total, as Utah has home matches this week against Air Force (2-10-2, 0-3-0) on Saturday and New Mexico (7-3-2, 1-1-0) on Sunday.
"This year, [Letro's] a constant offensive threat," Utah coach Rich Manning said.
Letro was the 2005 MWC Freshman of the Year. Last year, she scored 12 goals and was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Year and Utah's first All-America selection, as the Utes were 7-0 in MWC play and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
This season, Letro has formed a dynamic combination with midfielder Katy Reineke, who stepped into the scoring space left open by Amanda Feigt's graduation. Reineke has nine goals and five assists, many of those to Letro.
It's the result of a lot of work and an aggressive attitude - take the shot because you never know what will happen.
It hasn't always been easy for Letro, though. Her first season with the Utes, Letro could not play because of grades. Then, her career was delayed another season when she tore her ACL.
Since then, the Davis, Calif., native has become the goal machine Manning expected.
Scoring goals "is always great," she said. "They are always different."
Soccer
Utah swept the weekly Mountain West Conference women's soccer awards, with Reineke and senior defender Kiley Jones selected as the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.
Reineke had a goal and an assist during a 2-2 tie at UNLV, then assisted on Utah's goal in a 1-0 victory against No. 14 BYU. Jones was instrumental in handing the Cougars their first loss of the season.
Swimming
The Utah women's swimming and diving team opened the Greg Winslow era over the weekend with a 137-104 victory over New Mexico, winning the final six events for the victory under the new coach.
Ute winners included Jennifer Fredsall, 100 butterfly (58.69); Natalie Edge, 100 freestyle (53.89); Shannon McQueen, 100 backstroke (59.72); Adrienne Coburn, 500 free (5:16.37) and Caitlin Tidwell, 100 breaststroke (1:08.23).
