His agent said he wasn't authorized to release exact figures, but said Smith's new deal makes him among the five highest-paid receivers in the NFL.
The 28-year-old Smith had three years left on a six-year, $27 million contract. He was scheduled to make $3.l, $3.6 and $4.2 million over the next three seasons, but now will make significantly more.
A Los Angeles native, Smith had humble beginnings. He went to junior college before transferring to Utah, then became Carolina's third-round pick in 2001 and was used primarily as a kick returner as a rookie.
* Donovan McNabb had the same reaction most fans had when the Philadelphia Eagles selected quarterback Kevin Kolb with their first pick in last month's NFL draft.
''It was shocking,'' McNabb said in an interview on WIP-AM radio.
''When you draft somebody at the position you're in, of course you have questions of 'What does that mean?''' McNabb said. ''The most important thing for me is to make sure I'm healthy and 100 percent and get back out there competing and do the right thing on the field.''
McNabb met with coach Andy Reid soon after the draft, but wouldn't reveal details of their conversation.

Federer shows his form on clay
Roger Federer has stepped up his clay-court training, and it shows.
The top-ranked Federer beat Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the Rome Masters, a year after struggling to a three-set win over the Spaniard.
Federer converted breaks early in each set and faced only one break point, saving it midway through the first set by kicking a second serve wide that Almagro returned into the net.
James Blake advanced after defeating Gael Monfils 7-6 (4), 6-3. Blake's victory avenged a five-set loss to Monfils at last year's French Open.

No injuries in Indy crash at practice
Jon Herb spun and hit the wall coming out of the second turn during practice for the Indianapolis 500. He was not injured.
Herb, who was driving his backup Dallara, climbed from the car and was taken to the infield hospital for a mandatory checkup before being released and cleared to drive.
He had just completed a lap at 212 mph and spun sideways through the second turn, hitting the wall with the left side of the car and spinning several more times across the track before stopping in the infield grass.
