Broadus, BYU's starting point guard the last two seasons, was pulled over for speeding on Interstate 15 around 5 a.m. near the University Parkway exit in Provo, said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Preston Raban.
Troopers reported Broadus had a "strong smell of alcohol," Raban said. Broadus failed field sobriety tests and refused a request to submit to a Breathalyzer.
The 22-year-old senior was booked into the Utah County jail on the suspicion of DUI, not having a driver's license, improperly tinted windows and speeding, Raban said. Broadus was released at 7:42 a.m. on a bond totalling $1,675 for the four alleged offenses.
BYU coach Dave Rose and athletic director Tom Holmoe did not return telephone calls Sunday night. Broadus also could not be reached for comment.
Broadus transferred to BYU after playing two years at Western Nebraska Community College. Last season, in his first year at BYU, he was suspended for a game for violating team rules.
He most likely faces a stiff penalty from BYU, which prohibits students and employees from drinking alcohol.
Playing in all 15 games this season, Broadus averages 6.1 points and 1.9 rebounds. He played his best game of the season Saturday, scoring 19 points and adding four assists in the win over Mountain West preseason favorite San Diego State.
Senior Austin Ainge and seldom-used junior college transfer Ben Murdock are the other two point guards on the roster.
