There were 35 to 40 fires set in student neighborhoods Saturday night, said Columbus police Sgt. David Howson, whose department arrested about 17 people, five of them on arson charges. A trash bin also was set ablaze, burning two nearby cars, he said.
Battalion Fire Chief Kevin O'Connor said he was treated for bumps and bruises after he and two others were struck by a car that came through a temporary command post set up in the driveway of a student union building.
The two others, Ohio State assistant vice president for student affairs Barbara Rich and her husband, were treated early Sunday at Ohio State University Medical Center for minor injuries.
The driver of the car, George Karadimas, 22, a student at the school, has been charged with vehicular assault.
Karadimas was being held in a Franklin County jail and is scheduled to appear in court Monday morning for an arraignment, said sheriff's deputy Travis Carter.
Most students haven't returned to campus because fall classes don't start until Sept. 20, Howson said. Still, police concentrated their patrols on the campus area last night.
''This happens on big games, so we were prepared for it,'' Howson said.
The victory kept the Buckeyes (2-0) in perfect position for a run to a college football national title. Texas, which saw its 21-game winning streak snapped, is the defending national champion.
Georgia QB out four weeks
Georgia quarterback Joe Tereshinski will be sidelined for four to six weeks with an injured ankle, opening the door for freshman Matthew Stafford to become the starter.
Coach Mark Richt said Sunday that Tereshinski has a high ankle sprain.
''I doubt very seriously he can play within the next three games,'' Richt said.
No. 10 Georgia plays UAB on Saturday.
Spurrier 'embarrassed'
Steve Spurrier had been involved in shutouts before. Usually, though, he was on the winning sideline congratulating his defense on a job well done.
On Saturday night, it was Spurrier stuck with the goose egg. No. 10 Georgia did what only one other school had accomplished in Spurrier's 17 years as a college coach - hold the ball coach's club without a point in an 18-0 victory.
''I'm embarrassed,'' he said Sunday. ''I'm disappointed in our performance.''
That was obvious to anyone who watched. Spurrier ripped his headset off, tossed his notes and threw his hands out in disgust several times - mostly when the Gamecocks offense was on the field.
South Carolina managed only 35 yards rushing.
Two Vols out for season
Two Tennessee starters injured in the game against Air Force will not return this season, the team's head athletic trainer said Sunday.
Trainer Jason McVeigh said cornerback Inky Johnson underwent surgery to repair blood vessels in his right shoulder. Tackle Justin Harrell suffered a ruptured tendon in his left bicep and will also require surgery, McVeigh said.
Bring on Huskers?
The party has moved from Bozeman, Mont., to Chadron, Neb. Division II Chadron State made Montana State's worst fear a reality Saturday when the Eagles stunned the Bobcats 35-24 on the road.
A week ago, I-AA Montana State was celebrating a 19-10 victory over defending Big 12 North champion Colorado that created a buzz throughout college football.
''Everyone is saying they want Colorado to beat the [Nebraska] Huskers, and then we would be the best team in Nebraska,'' Chadron quarterback Joe McLain said Sunday.
