BOULDER, Colo. - Former Bingham High long-distance running standout Jackie Zeigle pleaded guilty last week in Boulder County Court to misdemeanor ethnic intimidation for sending a racist e-mail to a Latino teammate on the University of Colorado cross country team.

Zeigle moved back to Utah after the well-publicized incident and dropped out of CU. She entered the plea through defense attorney Philip Bienvenu, but now must return to Boulder to complete her sentence.

Zeigle must serve four days on a Boulder County Jail work crew and also perform 40 hours of community service for sending the message via an online network for college students to Greg Castro, whom she claimed at the time was harassing her.

She must also write letters of apology and attend conflict resolution classes, Judge David Archuleta said.

“She wishes she could take it back,” Bienvenu told the court, noting the message was “outrageous.”

Among other racial slurs, Zeigle called Castro a “river rat” and a “border hopper,” according to police reports.
