PROVO - Brigham Young University's nationally ranked men's and women's cross country teams had the advantage of course familiarity and managed to take advantage of it.

But defending national champions University of Colorado swept the men's and women's team titles at the NCAA Mountain Region Cross Country Championships at East Bay Golf Course on Saturday.

The sixth-ranked Cougar men finished third and were led by Josh Rohatinsky, who placed third in the men's 10K run.

Heidi Magill's fourth-place finish in the women's 6K race led the Cougar women to a second-place finish and, more importantly, an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21.

The BYU men, though not guaranteed a bid because they didn't finish in the top two as a team, are expected to receive an at-large bid later this week.

The BYU women had 59 points and were the only team remotely close to Colorado (53).

Magill wasn't alone, as teammate Chelsea Smith McKell finished fifth to keep the top-five women's finishers exclusive to the Buffaloes and the Cougars.

Rohatinsky was the only Cougar to finish in the top 10 for the men.

"All you want to do in this meet is qualify for nationals and do it as easy as you can," Rohatinsky said. "We did fine today."

Among other finishers from local schools, Utah State's Tiffany Strickland and Weber State's Katie Bowen finished 10th and 11th, respectively, in the women's, and Utah State's Trever Ball finished 12th in the men's.

As a team, Weber State finished fifth in the women's and ninth in men's, Utah State seventh in women's and sixth in men's and Southern Utah finished 13th in women's and 12th in men's.
