l The Class 5-A South all-stars rallied for four runs in the eighth to avoid being upset by the North all-stars.
l The Class 4-A South all-stars broke open a close game in the sixth inning to defeat 4-A North. OGDEN - Riverton's Nik Gumeson was hampered by elbow pain during the baseball season but he finished off his senior year in style on Saturday night.
Gumeson hit a two-run game-tying single in the eighth and Class 5-A South rallied to defeat Class 5-A North 7-5 in the annual all-star game. Gumeson also hit a double and had a solid defensive game on Saturday.
And he wasn't named the game's MVP?
That honor went to Viewmont's Cole Miles, who proved to be a big headache for the South's pitchers and defense. Miles had three hits, stole three bases and scored a run. Miles' performance nearly sparked the North to an upset win.
Cole deserved it, Gumeson said.
The North, comprised of players from Region 1, Hunter, and Skyline, wasn't expected to provide much of a challenge for the South. But the North proved to be a handful with the pesky Miles leading the offense and pitchers Blake Thompson and Judd Tolman mostly shutting down South batters.
The North led 5-3 going into the bottom of the eighth and that's when the South made its charge. Gumeson hit a two-run single to tie the game at 5-5. Alta's Mark Urry then drove in the game-winning run on a fielder's choice. A wild pitch by the North gave the South an insurance run.
Riverton's Jay Applegate coached the South and his Silverwolves led his offense. Ryan Lucero crushed a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
Gumeson said Saturday's game was a great experience.
It was the funnest game of my life, Gumeson said. Playing with all these great players was phenomenal. Gumeson received a runner-up MVP trophy for his performance. Cottonwood's B.J. Ferguson also was awarded a trophy for throwing three scoreless innings to start the game.
Class 4-A South 10, Class 4-A North 2: Eight days of rest did nothing to cool off Timpanogos pitcher Tyson Ford.
Ford, who had two wins and two saves in the 4-A state tournament, had five strikeouts and allowed no hits in three innings of work. The performance earned Ford the game's MVP award.
Tyson Gonzalez, Ford's teammate at Timpanogos, put the South up for good with an RBI single in the sixth.
