Real Salt Lake earned its first victory against an overseas opponent Tuesday when it beat Beira Mar of Algarve 4-0 in Portugal.

It was Real's widest margin of victory and it extended the team's preseason record to 5-1-1. Coach John Ellinger said the team's development is on schedule.

"We pretty much just dominated totally in the second half," Ellinger said. Early on, Beira Mar was able to keep control of the ball for some stretches of time, but at halftime, Real still had a 2-0 lead.

"As the game went on, we got more and more in control of the situation," Ellinger said. Jamie Watson scored two goals and had an assist. Luke Kreamalmeyer and Kevin Novak also scored. Beira Mar is in the Portuguese 2-B division; today, Real will play Portimonense of the Portuguese 2-A division, a slightly more difficult opponent.

Star players Eddie Pope and Clint Mathis were unavailable while they trained with the U.S. national team.
