Unnoticed Aztecs quietly off to solid league start

As much as Utah can't seem to grab any national attention despite a 15-3 record, San Diego State can do one better.

The Aztecs are flying under the radar in the Mountain West. It's time to start noticing Steve Fisher's team.

With two conference road wins, against Brigham Young and UNLV, the Aztecs can move to 4-0 with home wins against Wyoming and Colorado State.

"When you win games, everything feels like it is going better," said forward Chris Walton. "What we can't do right now is be happy where we are. We have to look at those games and see how we could have played better. It is going to take more than the way we have played so far to win the conference."

With Brandon Heath and Marcus Slaughter, SDSU has the best scoring combination in the conference. Walton is as good as any third option. Heath scored 37 points against UNLV. Slaughter added 17 points.

"Two games don't make a season, and yet it feels awfully good to win our first two games, especially on the road," Fisher said. "We have gotten solid contributions from everybody."

NEW MEXICO

Goodbye, Lobos.

New Mexico's gaudy non-conference 13-2 record won't mean much now that starting forward Danny Granger may be out for up to six weeks.

Granger, New Mexico's leading scorer and rebounder, injured his left knee Jan. 8 while trying to block a shot. He had surgery two days later.

"As far as how long it will take me to come back, I mean, I guess when my knee's ready," he said. "I mean, the doctor said it can take anywhere from four days to six weeks. It just depends on the person."

Granger is considered an NBA prospect. He has not ruled out returning for Saturday's game against Utah.

"He has a lot to lose if we put him out there not fully healthy," said coach Ritchie McKay. "I know he will be back in a uniform playing for the Lobos sooner than later."

AIR FORCE

The Falcons somehow beat New Mexico despite getting only nine rebounds and allowing the Lobos to shoot almost 70 percent from the field.

"A lot of programs talk about rebounds and defensive shooting percent," said Air Force coach Chris Mooney. "Thank God we don't."

New Mexico's 23 turnovers, 16 of which were Air Force steals - made the big difference.

The Falcons, who have a 22-game winning streak at home, scored 31 points off of turnovers.

Mooney will take the two-point win at home, but his team will need a much better effort in the next two games against BYU and Utah.

UNLV

Lon Kruger has picked up where he left off with the Atlanta Hawks.

One game after getting blown out at Utah, the Rebels lost at home to San Diego State. They must beat CSU and Wyoming at home to have any chance of competing for the conference championship.

They also might want to practice free-throw shooting. In the last two games, they are 8-for-19 from the line.

COLORADO STATE

After puffing their chests out following a win over lowly BYU, the Rams disgraced themselves in the second half against Utah.

Dale Layer seemed to more concerned about Utah's Marc Jackson than coaching his team. In the second half, after Jackson became entangled with one of his players, Layer popped off to the senior guard.

The CSU radio announcer also criticized Jackson during the broadcast.

Matt Williams' return from an injury will help. The forward saw limited minutes against the Utes.

WYOMING

Steve McClain's wife might be the most entertaining thing about Wyoming basketball. During the win over BYU, she constantly berated the referees.

One of her finest remarks was accusing one official of calling a foul against the Cowboys because he was tired and needed a rest. You gotta love her passion. Guard Jay Straight has scored in double figures in 15 consecutive games.

In Laramie to celebrate 100 years of Wyoming basketball, former Cowboys star Fennis Dembo spoke to the team before the BYU game. He called out Straight, saying the senior needed to be more of a leader.
