Local Sports: Aggies win in Alaska

Long after most Utahns had gone to bed Thursday night, the Utah State Aggies collected their first win of the men's basketball season. Freshman Jaycee Carroll scored a game-high 19 points and the Aggies outlasted Georgia Southern 71-61 at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Aggies, who have won 11 straight season openers, will meet Central Florida today (2 p.m., MST) at the tournament. Spencer Nelson added seven points, 10 rebounds and five assists for Utah State, while John Neil and Chris Huber also had seven points.

BASKETBALL

BYU signs another: James Anderson, a 6-foot-10 center from Page, Ariz., has signed a national letter of intent to play for BYU. Anderson, whose commitment was reported by The Tribune several months ago, will go on an LDS Church mission before entering BYU.

GOLF

Champions Tour: Former Utahn Mike Malaska moved into a three-way tie for second place after three rounds of the 108-hole final stage of Champions Tour qualifying at St. Augustine, Fla. Malaska has shot 68-67-70 and is contending for one of seven full exemptions for 2005. Eight conditional spots are also offered. Ex-BYU golfer Pat McGowan (73-68-69) is tied for 20th. Ogden's Jimmy Blair (72-74-73), Spanish Fork's Roy Christensen (74-75-73) and American Fork's Kim Thompson (71-78-74) may miss today's 72-hole cut.

WRESTLING

Lofthouse wins: The Tribune's most recent male Prep Athlete of the Year, Luke Lofthouse, started his collegiate wrestling career at Iowa by winning a title at 174 pounds at the Spartan Classic tournament at the University of Dubuque last weekend. Lofthouse defeated teammate Ben Stedman 9-2 in the final round.
