ATHENS, Greece This time, the U.S. women's volleyball team made the plays when they counted the most.
Having faded in key stretches of an opening-match loss to China in the Olympics, the Americans rebounded Monday night with a four-game win over Germany: 25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 27-25.
The match was a little tougher than expected, but the Americans came through with a balanced attack. Tayyib Haneef led the way with 17 kills, Keba Phipps added 11 and Highland High graduate Logan Tom had 10.
Angelina Grun posted 16 kills for Germany, which had opened the tournament with a five-game win over Cuba.
The U.S. women will meet the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.
The U.S. men's team will return to action tonight, meeting the Netherlands.
The Americans liked the way they competed in Sunday's four-game loss to Italy, ranked No. 2 in the world.
"It is a tough way to start, but we showed that we can play with anyone in the world right now," said Kevin Barnett. "It's just a matter of not giving up a couple of runs in the middle of games."
The U.S. team can also look for a bigger contribution from former Brigham Young star Ryan Millar. Coming off an ankle injury, he provided some spark in Sunday's fourth game, even though the Americans ended up losing 25-23.
The Netherlands opened the tournament with a five-game win over Russia.
