Juan Diego's Matt Howa had extra incentive to setting up a Swing For Life last week at a Soaring Eagle baseball game.

The sophomore is the nephew of Swing For Life founder Kathy Howa and he took it upon himself to set up a Breast Cancer Awareness game. All he had to do was get his coach, Troy Davis, to approve, find an opponent to go along and get jerseys with pink numbers.

No problem to all three. Judge Memorial, a team Juan Diego has faced in the past two 3A state championship games, readily jumped on board and the second game between the two teams this season included T-shirt sales and auctioning off gloves and helmets.

"You have to give Matt a lot of credit," Davis said. "It's great to see a sophomore take charge.

Juan Diego won the game 6-3 behind a complete game from Luke West and a couple of late insurance runs.

Brighton girls' track

For those coaches who think prom is a major distraction during spring sports, Kylie Hirschi's performance at the Taylorsville Invitational will prove you wrong.

One night after her senior prom, Brighton's Hirschi broke a 20-year-old school record while winning the 400 meters with a time of 57.43 seconds. It was the first time this season she's ran the event.

Phenom sprinter Aubrey Hale also did the prom thing and it didn't distract her either -- she was the meet's only multiple-event winner with her usual dominance of the 100 meter (12.09) and 200 (24.94).

Waterford soccer

A perfect mark during 2A North regular season play fell through for Waterford last week. A 1-0 loss to St. Joseph and a 2-1 setback to Rowland Hall will put the Ravens on the road for the opening round of the state tournament this week.

2A North uses a tournament to determine postseason seeds. Waterford (8-3-1) traveled to Gunnison late Wednesday.

Juan Diego soccer

The Soaring Eagle concluded the regular season with a 6-8-3 mark and travels to the Region 10 champ (either Park City or Wasatch) for an opening round match Thursday.

Riverton track

The Silverwolves claimed both team titles at the Taylorsville invitational with true team efforts.

Jaime Duckworth was the lone individual winner for Riverton after finishing first in the shot put with a best throw of 40-4.
