West Valley City » The Utah Grizzlies goal of winning a Kelly Cup officially ended Friday when the Idaho Steelheads completed a series sweep with a 4-1 win over Utah at the E Center. Idaho withstood Utah's early push and took a 3-0 lead into the second period. With Richard Bachman between the pipes, the Steelhead win was all but sealed. Bachman made 32 saves, many of which were spectacular, holding a shutout until Tom May's goal at 11:15 in the third period.
With the season--and even maybe some careers--ending, 2,870 fans bid adieu to hockey until next season. Which Grizzlies they will get to see next year is still very up in the air. James Sixsmith plans to play in Austria next season and May said that going overseas is the plan for many players in the locker room. He expects others to retire, some may end up on other teams and the main core of the 2009-2010 likely will be disparaged by next season.
"Playing hockey, you never know what the next year is going to be like, especially in this league," Sixsmith said. "That's one of the reason's it sucks to see it end because in a week everybody's gone and I might not ever see my roommate again."
In his second season as head coach of the Grizz, Kevin Colley lead his team to six more regular season wins than the 2008-2009 season and into the second round of the playoffs after being bounced in the first round a year ago. Although a Kelly Cup was the team goal, Colley concedes that the season was a positive one overall.
"The second round is a successful season, no question," Colley said. "You live and you learn. I've learned lot from the guys in that locker room and I've got to get stronger for next year too."
The Utah Grizzlies are eliminated from the Kelly Cup playoffs by the Idaho Steelheads, losing 4-1 and being swept in the second round.
» With the season over, many futures are up in the air with overseas play, retirement or other options looming.
