With one shot, Woods Cross' season went from half-dead to reborn. The Wildcats beat Bountiful 51-50 Friday as a three-pointer from Ryan Anderson in the game's dwindling seconds handed Bountiful its first region loss and gave the Wildcats' season a whole new life.
Woods Cross held the streaky outside shooting of Bountiful to 50 percent and controlled the game for most of the first half. After a small spurt in the third quarter from the Braves, Woods Cross held steady behind post player. Mark Evans. He grabbed eight rebounds on his way to a team-high 18 points before Anderson sank the Braves' undefeated Region 6 season.
Woods Cross improved to 4-4 with the win, and now smack-dab in the middle of Region 6, it has four games left to determine its own playoff fate. Anderson, the junior guard who has catapulted himself to second on the team by averaging 13.5 points per game, sees this win as a morale booster and a perfect harbinger to go on a run.
"I think this is going to give us a lot of confidence." Anderson said. "We've got some tough games coming up that we win, and this was a good team, so it's definitely given us confidence that we beat them."
Layton Christian
Layton Christian has been on a roll for the past three weeks, sweeping its past five games to move within one game of first place in Region 14 with a 6-2 record.
Isaac Pedroza, after missing two games for violating team rules earlier this season, has exploded in the past four games, scoring an average of 17.8 points. Micah Shore has come on as a beautiful complementary asset, averaging 16 points over the five-game win streak.
On top of that, freshman Colin Greenhill, who had been out a month with an ankle injury, has come back with vengeance and could be a vital tool off the bench down the stretch.
With only two games left on the slate, Layton Christian is trying as hard as possible to squeak into a region championship, and coach Bobby Porter is ready to keep things rolling and play Layton Christian basketball.
"I don't think we're on a hot streak, but we got some people back from injuries and things are working out for wins. These next two games are big momentum builders going into the state tournament. I think we're ready to make a move, we're just going to go out there and do what we do."
Bountiful
The Bountiful Braves are trying to pick themselves up after the trap-game loss to region foe Woods Cross.
The Braves were ice cold to start off, missing their first eight shots from the field. They made up for the effort with eight straight shots to start off the third quarter, behind McKay LaSalle and his 16-point third quarter on his way to a game-high 21, but couldn't close out a nail-biter for the first time in region.
It's never easy to come back from the season's first loss, but Bountiful's outlook is bright. Its next three opponents have six region wins total between them, and barring another atrocious night from the field, it's pretty easy to assume the season finale against fellow one-loss team Olympus very well could be for the Region 6 crown.
