NFL » Donte' Stallworth will get the chance to resurrect his NFL career, but it won't happen in Cleveland. The Browns released the troubled wide receiver Monday, wasting little time after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday that Stallworth would be reinstated following the Super Bowl.
Stallworth was suspended for the 2009 season by Goodell after he pleaded guilty to killing a pedestrian while driving drunk in Florida. He spent 24 days in jail.
Stallworth, 29, spent one season with the Browns, catching 17 passes for 170 yards and one touchdown in 2008 while battling injuries. A college star at Tennessee, he has also played with New England, Philadelphia and New Orleans since the Saints drafted him in the first round in 2002.
» The Oakland Raiders have hired longtime NFL defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast as an assistant, but the team did not specify his role. Pendergast was let go last month as defensive coordinator in Kansas City.
Galaxy's Mathis out with knee injury
soccer » Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Clint Mathis will miss four to six weeks after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The team said that Mathis was hurt in training last week and had the surgery Saturday.
Mathis was re-acquired by the Galaxy in January from MLS Cup champion Real Salt Lake. The 32-year-old midfielder, in his third stint with the Galaxy, is expected to be ready for the March 27 season opener against New England.
Patrick ready for NASCAR debut
MOTORSPOTS » Driver Danica Patrick said Monday that she will make her NASCAR debut Saturday in the second-tier Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway. She previously had declared Daytona not the right place to make her NASCAR debut, but she changed her mind after finishing sixth in an ARCA race at the track over the weekend.
