College football: TCU, BYU and Utah make strong showings in all-MWC awards

Texas Christian University swept the major all-Mountain West Conference awards announced Tuesday, with Utah and BYU also making strong showings.

From TCU, Andy Dalton, the junior quarterback, was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year while Jerry Hughes was named the Defensive Player of the Year and Gary Patterson was named Coach of the Year.

Offensively, Utah placed receiver David Reed, running back Eddie Wide and senior lineman Zane Beadles on the first team. On defense, the Utes were represented by defensive end Koa Misi, linebacker Stevenson Sylvester and safety Robert Johnson.

BYU did well on offense, placing senior tight end Dennis Pitta, junior running back Harvey Unga and sophomore lineman Matt Reynolds on the first team. Jan Jorgensen was the lone first teamer on defense.

MWC » Utah has six first-team selections, while BYU has four.
