Provo » The BYU Cougars unveiled their future Tuesday night in an 82-46 win over Central Washington.
A pair of freshmen, Tyler Haws and Brandon Davies , got their first career starts and delivered big games in the college basketball exhibition at the Marriott Center. Haws had 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting, while Davies chipped in 11 points and had a game-high eight rebounds.
The Cougars never trailed in breezing to the win, and shot 50 percent from the field, while holding the Wildcats, who lost 77-48 at Washington last week, to 24.2 percent shooting.
Jimmer Fredette , Jonathan Tavernari and Jackson Emery were the other starters as coach Dave Rose continued to tinker with starting lineups and rotations in preparation for Friday's season-opener against Bradley.
Fredette led five Cougars in double figures with 15 points, and Tavernari had 14.
In the second half, coach Dave Rose went with Noah Hartsock and Lamont Morgan Jr. in addition to Emery, Fredette and Tavernari.
Signing day
Today begins the NCAA national letter of intent signing period for basketball and other sports, and it should be a big one for the Cougars.
BYU is expected to receive letters from Provo High combo guard Kyle Collinsworth and Anson Winder , a 6-3 guard from Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas. Collinsworth committed to BYU in October, while Winder committed last week.
The Cougars have one more scholarship available, but Rose has said he will probably save that until the spring signing period begins.
No captain, no problem
There was surprise among BYU followers when the season started that neither seniors Tavernari and Chris Miles nor junior Fredette were voted as team captains by their teammates. The captains are senior Morgan and junior Emery.
Tavernari said not being a captain doesn't bother him in the least.
"When we had the vote, my vote was for those two because Jackson and I are cousins, and he was the best man at my wedding, and Lamont is one of the best people I know. They are amazing people, they have huge character," Tavernari said, adding, "Coach told me you don't have to be a captain to be a leader."
Emery's uncle's cousin is the recently married Tavernari's father in law.
Redshirt ready?
Rose was asked if he is past the point where he would redshirt a player this season.
"I would say probably, but you never really know," he said. "I still have a couple of options. You never like to talk about it. ... Until you are kind of locked into it, you still keep that option open."
Briefly
The Cougars' opponent on Friday, Bradley, is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. The game is part of the inaugural Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge, a series that pits eight teams from each conference. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at the Marriott Center.
