NHL wins fight over Coyotes

The Phoenix Coyotes' bumpy six-month journey through U.S. Bankruptcy Court has come to an end with a judge's approval of the sale of the franchise to the NHL.

Judge Redfield T. Baum signed the order Monday. The NHL's bid totals about $140 million.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the league would take full control of the Coyotes' business operations.

The sale ends a lengthy court fight pitting the NHL against Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes and Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie , who wanted to move the team to Hamilton, Ontario.

Gary Kaplan , 50, must also forfeit $43.6 million in illegally obtained revenue as part of a plea agreement. Prosecutors said Tuesday that Kaplan still has tens of millions in Swiss bank accounts. Kaplan pleaded guilty in August to racketeering conspiracy, violating the Wire Wager Act and conspiring to violate it. He has been jailed since his March 2007 arrest in Puerto Rico.

Federer wins in return from break

tennis » Roger Federer made a winning return from a six-week break, beating Belgium's Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-4 at his hometown Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel, Switzerland. Federer last pleayed Sept. 20, when he helped Switzerland defeat Italy in the Davis Cup. He will next play 51st-ranked Andreas Seppi of Italy, who beat Swiss wild-card entry Stephane Bohli 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
