American wins N.Y. Marathon

Meb Keflezighi became the first U.S. man to win the New York City Marathon since 1982 on Sunday.

Born in Eritrea, the 34-year-old Keflezighi became a U.S. citizen in 1998. He pulled away from Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya in the 23rd mile to beat the four-time Boston Marathon champ by 41 seconds. His time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 15 seconds was a personal best.

Morocco's Jaouad Gharib finished third and Ryan Hall of the U.S. was fourth on a day when six Americans were in the top 10 for the first time since 1979.

Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia captured the women's race in 2:28.52, with two-time defending champ Paula Radcliffe falling back to fourth then grabbing her left leg in pain after finishing.

SUU players sweep conference awards

college football » Major Gray , Colin Pretlow and Fesi Sitake of Southern Utah swept the Great West Conference player of the week honors for their performances in Saturday's 56-35 win over UC Davis.

Gray, a junior from Las Vegas, is the league's offensive player of the week after tying a school record with four TD runs. He gained 74 yards on 16 carries.

Pretlow, a junior from Las Vegas, is the defensive player of the week. He had 13 tackles, forced a fumble and returned an interception 46 yards for a TD.

Sitake, a junior from Sandy who played at Hillcrest High School, returned a punt 61 yards for a touchdown and is the special teams player of the week. He averaged 38.3 yards on three punt returns.

This is the first time in Southern Utah's six years as a member of the conference that its players swept the weekly honors.

Aggies end regular season with victory
