The Westminster men's basketball team enters the upcoming season with some national respect. The Griffins are ranked No. 9 in the NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 preseason poll. At the end of last season, Westminster was ranked No. 6.

The Griffins will play three ranked teams. Westminster will play No. 8 Concordia and No. 3 Fresno Pacific on back-to-back days in November. Both games will be played on a neutral site in Las Vegas.

During Frontier Conference action, the Griffins will play defending national champions Rocky Mountain College, which ranked No. 15.

Westminster returns nine players from a team that went 30-5 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championships.

Jeramie Hopson is the team's lone returning starter.

The women's team is sitting just outside of the Top 25 preseason poll, at No. 27 with 45 points.

Weber State player lauded

Weber State defensive back Thyrell Lewis is the Big Sky Conference's Defensive Player of the Week after the Wildcats' 28-20 win over Northern Colorado. He had five tackles, two pass breakups and a game-clinching interception in the victory.

In the fourth quarter against Northern Colorado, Weber State had an eight-point lead. The Bears had the ball but Lewis intercepted a pass intended for Northern Colorado's Bryan Waggener and returned it to the Bears' 18-yard line.

This is Lewis' first such honor.
