The Utah Open hasn't had a repeat winner since 1940 when Emery Zimmerman went back to back. Unless there is a break in Bruce Summerhays' schedule, there won't be one in 2009, either.

At least six former champions will compete in the 83rd annual tournament, scheduled to begin Aug. 21 at Oakridge Country Club in Farmington, including Summerhays' nephew Boyd Summerhays.

Bruce needed a playoff to defeat his nephew last year at Oakridge to win the event for the first time. He said there are three Champions Tour events that could conflict with his defense of the state championship, which he won for the first time at age 64.

"Why defend," Summerhays said, tongue in cheek. "Those kids are way too good. I played absolutely brilliant golf and had to win in a playoff for crying out loud."

Qualifying is Aug. 17.

Returning champions include Summerhays (2002), Clay Ogden (2007), Pete Stone (2006), Steve Runge (1997), Jay Don Blake (1988) and Mike Malaska (1974).
