Ute linebacker facing jail time after bar fight
A University of Utah football player is in jail and has been charged with three misdemeanors in what police say was a bar fight.
Linebacker Maurice Neal on Sunday punched a man in the face, dropping him to the ground unconscious outside a sports bar near 300 S. West Temple, according to a document filed Wednesday in 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City. Neal and others then began fighting with a second man, documents claim.
When the second man fell to the ground, Neal continued kicking him in the torso and head, a police officer claims in the documents. Neal ran from police but was quickly stopped and apprehended by pursuing officers.
The officers booked Neal into the Salt Lake County jail and he remained there Wednesday evening. A court has set Neal's bail at $2,500.
All three counts carry up to one year in jail. A court date has not been set.
Neal, of Oakland, Calif., played in nine games with the Utes in 2008 and will be a sophomore in the upcoming season.
