Jazz fans know about Matt Harpring's history as a high school quarterback, but several of his teammates also have football in their pasts:
Ronnie Brewer: "I actually wanted to play football really bad. But growing up, I was a lot smaller and skinnier than everybody, so I didn't have the opportunity to be one of the bigger guys. When I did get bigger, I was already good at basketball, so they were like, 'No, I don't think that's a good idea to try to play football.' "
Paul Millsap: "They wanted me to get out there. I was really tall at the time. I didn't like the heat, I didn't like the contact, so I stuck with basketball. There's a lot of contact [in basketball], but it's not the physical abuse they get out there. I'll take this any day."
Ronnie Price: "Football was my first love. When you're 5-foot-1, 128 pounds as a freshman in high school, you're forced not to [play]. When it came down to whether I was going to play football or basketball once I got to high school in the state of Texas, I had a better chance of keeping my life by playing basketball. For me, it was a forced decision. If I had this body, if I was any bigger, I probably wouldn't be talking to you guys right now. I probably would've played basketball, but maybe succeeded more in football."
Millsap was a middle-school quarterback, Brewer wanted to play receiver -- "I felt like I was pretty quick back then and had pretty good hands" -- and Price played quarterback, cornerback and safety.
Jazz at Dallas Saturday, 7 p.m., FSN Utah
If they can get past Oklahoma City and Memphis, the Jazz could celebrate a 3-0 road trip by beating the Mavericks.
