Saturday night's 2-1 loss to Victoria at the E Center was Utah's third straight to its division rival. The Grizzlies have fallen on rough times since leading scorer Ryan Kinasewich sustained injury earlier this month. Losing eight of their last nine games overall.
"[Our] guys aren't scoring goals right now," Grizzlies coach Kevin Colley said. "I feel for them. I really do. The current slide we've been on is frustrating for everybody."
Utah's shots on goal attempts have improved of late - Saturday being no different as they had a 36-28 advantage over Victoria.
Unfortunately for Utah, the Salmon Kings were able to capitalize on its opportunities - none more important than Wes Goldie's goal in the third period. With 8:58 left, the right winger was in the right place at the right time, tapping Utah goalkeeper Michael Mole's save on a relentless Victoria attack, finding the back of the net and securing Victoria's win.
"Both goaltenders played great. We've had some close battles with them. It makes for great hockey. Unfortunately they had one more than us tonight," Colley said.
Utah (7-9-1 overall) was led by Evan Kotsopoulos who scored on a penalty shot in the first period.
The left winger had a game high seven shot attempts. What hurt Utah ultimately was it's ineffectiveness on power plays - going 0-5. Victoria (11-7-1-1) wins the season series over its division rival, 4-2.
Utah will try and turn the tide on the road Wednesday vs. Idaho.
