Sports in brief: Former Aggie chosen as MVP

Former Utah State quarterback Anthony Calvillo of the Montreal Alouettes was named the Canadian Football League's Most Outstanding Player this week. Montreal will host the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday for the Gray Cup.

Calvillo, who also won the award in 2003, threw for 5,633 yards this season. He played at USU from 1992-93.

Tennis

Davis Cup final tied after Day 1

Feliciano Lopez upset Juan Martin del Potro 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 6-3 Friday in Mar del Plata, Argentina, allowing Spain to end the first day of the Davis Cup final tied 1-1 tie with Argentina. David Nalbandian brushed aside David Ferrer 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in the opening singles.

In today's doubles, Nalbandian and Agustin Calleri will face the Spanish pair of Lopez and Fernando Verdasco. Reverse singles are set for Sunday.

Spain is playing without top-ranked Rafael Nadal (injured knee).

Football

Cuban team expels pair

Ace pitcher Yadel Marti and outfielder Yasser Gomez have been thrown off Cuba's top league team - Havana's Industriales - for ''a grave act of indiscipline,'' likely ending their hopes of playing in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Two people close to the team said the action came after the pair was caught trying to defect to the United States.

The WBC will be played March 5-23 in five nations.

Sorenstam misses cut

Annika Sorenstam's LPGA Tour career presumably ended Friday afternoon, when she failed to qualify for the third round of the ADT Championship in West Palm Beach, Fla. She shot a 3-over 75, putting her at 5 over for the week - two shots away from surviving the cut from 32 down to 16 for today. Sorenstam announced six months ago she was leaving the tour at year's end

Katherine Hull shot 71 to get to 5 under to lead after two rounds.
